Quilts are sold in a range of sizes, and the right one depends on your bed and how much of a drape you like. Here is how to choose, using the quilts we stock at Rhool in Kingsbridge, Devon.
Start with your bed
Typical UK mattress widths are about 135cm for a double, 150cm for a king and 180cm for a super king. Measure your own mattress, as sizes vary, and note how deep it is if it is thick. A quilt that is wider than the mattress will hang over each side. The overhang or drape on each side is the quilt width minus the mattress width, divided by two.
Our hand block printed quilts
Our block print quilts are hand stitched and hand block printed in Jaipur, India, using traditional wooden blocks. They are reversible, with a different depth of pattern on each side. The outer is 100% cotton voile with a cotton wadding filling. They come in two sizes:
- Double/King: 230cm x 275cm (90 x 108 inches).
- King/Super King: 275cm x 275cm (108 x 108 inches), available on many patterns.
Because each quilt is handmade, sizes are approximate and can vary slightly.
How much will it hang over?
These figures use the typical mattress widths above and the width of the quilt, laid across the bed:

A generous drape looks relaxed and cosy. If you prefer a neater look, choose the smaller size for your bed. A double/kingsize quilt can also be turned so the long edge runs across the bed (keep in mind the pattern will also run sideways which may or may not be relevant!) They also look beautiful folded back across the bottom of the bed to show both sides of the pattern, adding cosy layering.
The other quilts we stock
Other brands have their own sizes, which are given on each product page:
- IB Laursen quilts: some are 130cm x 180cm, a single bed size that also works across the foot of a double or king bed (little drape), and some of their bedspreads are large at 240cm x 240cm.
- Madam Stoltz quilted cotton bed covers: most are 240cm x 240cm, a generous fit for a double bed that also works on a king, without reaching the floor. A smaller 130cm x 180cm size is also available in some colours, which suits a single bed or makes a lovely throw across the foot of a bed or over a sofa.
- Yonder organic cotton quilted blankets: 150cm x 220cm, which suits large singles through to doubles depending on the drape you want.
Looking after your quilt
Our block print and Yonder quilts can be machine washed, but very rarely, and only on a gentle or delicates wash, so as not to damage the hand stitching. If you use your quilt every day, with a sheet or over a duvet, you may only need to wash it about twice a year. The IB Laursen and Madam Stoltz bedspreads are machine washable. Always check the care line on the product page.
